The Things They Carried by Tim O Brian

The Important Things They Carried by Tim O Brian

PHI 101 September 3, 2012 Journal 1 Today our task was to read some fictional literature called “The important things They Brought” by Tim O’brien. At first I thought this was going to be another dull project for another class but this book captured my interest quickly since although it was thought about imaginary Tim O’Brien actually did fight; the Vietnam War to be more specific and he told his stories od what it resembled to be drafted and all the dreadful procedures of being a boy in an unusual nation defending a cause he did not agree with and had little understanding of.

In Module one we addressed several concerns about specific chapters however one of the chapters that most likely hit me the hardest was “How to Inform A True War Story” (O’Brien, 74-76). In this part of the story Rat Kiley and Kurt Lemon are 2 pals who were playing catch in the hopes to get some quick smiles and laughs in the middle of all this turmoil called Vietnam. Curt wasn’t taking notice of where he was strolling and he stepped on a booby-trapped 105 round. He was dead instantly. In Rat Kiley’s anger he chose this harmless animal to mutilate senselessly.

It was a ridiculous act due to the fact that slaughtering this buffalo wasn’t going to revive his friend. “A real war story, if genuinely told, makes the stomach think”. It did just that checking out the in-depth account of how Rat shot this animal piece by piece in his anger. He didn’t shoot it in the heart so that it would pass away instantly he took his time and that’s what made it so true and gruesome. How we as human beings can appear too strong and hard but when we enjoy we love difficult and all logical heads out the window.

We likewise went over in module one about “On The Rainy River” (O’Brien 37-58). How Tim had to decide on whether or not he was going to serve in this war due to the fact that he received a draft notice. During the 1960’s a draft suggested you had no choice you were mandated to take part whether you wanted to or not. He wished to go to Canada to conceal our assignment was to choose whether we would have done the same. Everyone fears the unknown it is a natural incident however it take place even more so when you understand the unknown may cost you your life.

It is already understood that “War is hell” (O’Brien, 74). And now he needed to choose between his family and his country or his life. The opportunities of him returning home in one piece were slim. “All of us, I expect, like to think that in a moral emergency we will act like the heroes of our youth, fearlessly, forthrightly, without thought of individual loss or reject” (O’Brien, 37). But truth is nobody wants to die especially when you don’t believe in the cause.

The end outcome, the true reason I think he chose to go was since of his worry. The fear he needed to fail his family and friends that would feel the embarassment because of his actions. It was the worry of the repercussions for not going. He called himself a coward due to the fact that he didn’t run away. I was under the impression we was brave since he was able to face death in order to please his friends and family. That’s when I recognized that this book narrated of how someone felt how they look at the world through their own eyes.

It made me realize that everyone’s viewpoint could be entirely various depending upon how we perceive the world. My cousin and I originate from the exact same community, the very same schools, the same culture however I always look for understanding out and she longs for nothing more than food, music and television to captivate her days. She discovers humor in other individuals’s failures and critiques individuals roughly however does not take a look at her own errors. She will find excuses for her failures by passing the blame on others.

I wonder why did we come out so various when we come from the same place and our parents are very similar. But in some methods I discover her courageous due to the fact that she behaves by doing this in public and in private she does not pretend to be something she is not and she takes pride in herself no matter what anyone believes. I believe Tim would say my cousin is brave due to the fact that she was able to do what she wanted to do despite what others believe. I believe if cousin would have been put because position she would have went to Canada.
