Oedipus the King Paper
Sabrina Bousbar 9/19/12 Duration 5 English II Honors Part 1 Oedipus the King, lines 1-750 1) What were your preliminary ideas about the character of Oedipus? My own initial thought about Oedipus is that he is really great towards his “moms and dads” since he thinks he will be saving his household and not eliminating his dad. Then when he eliminates the king I was questioning why he would begin a fight to the death when they could have simply solved it peacefully. Then I believed he was very held up and spoiled since he became king for getting rid of the Sphinx and was extremely persistent to his brother-in-law (uncle).
Then I thought that he needs to stop talking and listen to his own thoughts and believe everything threw. 2) From lines 1-89, what qualities do the people attribute to Oedipus? What heroic qualities does he credit to himself? The qualities individuals credit to Oedipus is that they see him as a really kind, clever, and a strong man mainly because he faced the Sphinx. The brave quality that he credits to himself is that he saved the kingdom by getting rid of the Sphinx. Oedipus though does not understand it was him who killed the king. 3) Teiresias is blind however sees. Oedipus has eyes but is blind. Line 413) Why is Oedipus, the male who resolved the riddle of the Sphinx, so slow to solve the riddle of his own identity? Oedipus is slow to fix the riddle of his own identity because he does not see how he eliminated the king. He does not see that the prophecy is never wrong and that he was expect to eliminate his dad and marry his mom. He doesn’t see that he eliminated a guy the day the king went missing. He is too stubborn to see what remains in front of him. The majority of people don’t wish to know the fact so they find a way to make another reason rather of the reality, which exactly what Oedipus is doing.
