Oedipus Rex– Four Characteristics
In this essay of Oedipus Rex there are 4 qualities I will go over. The first characteristic I will go over is if the story of Oedipus Rex is an example of a Greek catastrophe and if so what is the essential catastrophe. Next I will explain the standard stress in this play. The 3rd characteristic I will explain is what inspiration I discover in the character Oedipus and finally I will offer a character Analysis on the character Jocasta.
The play Oedipus Rex is a clear example of a Greek tragedy, as you read thorough the story you initially discover that Oedipus was the boy of Laius and Jocasta, who ere the king and queen of Thebes, a town in Greece. After Oedipus was born an oracle prophesied the kid would mature and kill his father and wed his mom. As a result of this Laius and Jocasta chose to kill Oedipus. They ultimately took Oedipus into the wilderness and left him to die. This being at the beginning of the story it starts to tell you that this story is bound to be an awful one.
The awful plot just thickens from this point. The story goes on to tell you that Oedipus is discovered by a shepherd and provided to a friend and then required to the town of Corinth, were the king and queen of Corinth later on dopted him, since they might not bore a kid of their own. The story advances to tell of him never learning the reality of his adoption. As soon as again in the story the plot begins to thicken even more. It goes on to say that Oedipus encounters an old male on the roadway and he enters a bitter quarrel over something.
The quarrel then develops into a battle and in the end the old man and his servants lie dead on the roadway. Little did Oedipus understand but the old male he had eliminated was his father and also the king of Thebes. The story goes on to tell how Oedipus goes on to end up being the king of Thebes and marry Jocasta. He ater has four kids with her and he swears to find out who killed Jocasta’s late other half in his efforts to discover the culprit, he starts to see the resemblance in between what had occurred and what he had actually done.
It’s not up until the Sheppard who originally discovered Oedipus is questioned that the truth is finally revealed. This is where the story pertains to an awful end as the Jocasta hears word of this she commits suicide by hanging herself. As Oedipus becomes aware of this he runs in and takes the pins from Jocasta’s gown and in an act of misery he pokes his eyes out. The story is no doubt a catastrophe, however perhaps it remained in a method ayback for past crimes viewing as Lucias and Jocasta left their kid to die and in turn they were the ones to pass away.
This summarize that this story is a catastrophe and it shows that the basic stress to me in this story was everything you do returns on you. The 3rd characteristic in this story was the inspirations I found in Oedipus was that he wanted to be exemplary and live his life in truth and in doing so he searches for the reality about everything that had actually happened in the story such as, who he was, where he was from, and who killed the king. He selected to know the truth instead of living in a closet and n doing so he is punished.
It just demonstrated how the fact truly does hurt. In the end of the story Oedipus had no motivation due to the fact that he had absolutely nothing delegated live for. Lastly I am going to do a character analysis on the character Jocasta. In this story Jocasta played an integrate role, she was very essential to the story itself. It would appear in this story that jocasta was an innocent victim however her goal in this story was to evaluate the king of Thebes. It is stated that the gods had actually wanted this upon her. So possibly Jocasta was a victim or maybe she was a driver in this story.
