Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield has to do with a middle-aged English teacher who secretly listens to other people’s discussion due to her loneliness. Every weekend Miss Brill heads out to the parade in a park and listens to other individuals’s discussion since she has no one to talk to however her fur coat. She treasures her fur coat as if it’s her family pet and has conversations with it.
Towards the end of the story, she understands that no one likes her, for that reason she goes home into her dark space and cries.
Katherine Mansfield, uses imagery, characterization, and point-of-view utilizes these three literary aspects to notify the significance of the lonliness.
The author uses imagery for the reader to much better understand the story and to develop the apperance of her solitude. In the beginning of the story, the author mentions “She had taken it out of its box that afternoon, shaken out the moth powder … rubbed the life back into the dim little eyes.
” (Mansfield 1)Here, Miss Brill gets her fur coat and begins to speak with it and animals it as if it is her animal.
From this, the reader can visually translate that Miss Brill had no friends or family to speak with when she was lonley. Furthermore, towards the end of the story, a woman at the park states, “It’s exactly like a fried whiting.”(Mansfield 4) The reader can picture the story the author planned on how the little girl at the park teases Miss Brill of her fur coat saying that it appears like fried fish. After hearing this, Miss Brill goes house and cries in her dark space.
In addition, the author utilizes point-of-view for the reader to step into the main characters’ shoes. In the beginning of the story, when Miss Brill went to the park to enjoy the parade, the author states “Wasn’t the conductor using a brand-new coat, too? She sure it was new.” (Mansfield 1)
From this quote, the reader can see that she went to the parade often, enough to understand what the bandsmen wore each weekend to perform. Furthermore, the author states “But to-day she passed the baker’s by, climbed the stairs, entered into the little dark room- her space like a cupboard … She sat there for a long time.” (Mansfield 4) After returning from the parade, getting made fun of, she goes to her room in a depressed state of mind and cries by herself.
Finally, from the begininng of the story, the reader can tell that Miss Brill had an unique character. From talking and petting her fur coat, to eavesdropping, her character is a bit various from others. Her lonliness might have lead her to eavesdrop on individuals and have a fur coat as her buddy. The author states, “This was frustrating, for Miss Brill constantly looked foward to the discussion.” (Mansfield 1), to reveal her lonliness. In this quote, the reader can see that Miss Brill liked to speak to individuals and even if she wasn’t in the discussion, she wants to listen to them.
Furthermore, he author states “How she enjoyed it! How she enjoyed sitting there, seeing all of it! It was like a play.” (Mansfield 3) This quote is discussing how she enjoyed the parade as if it was a play. The reader can see that she captivated herself by going to the park every weekend to forget her isolation.
The author effectively used these three literary elements for the readers to better comprehend the story, to produce the look of her lonliness and picture analyze what the author was intending to say. Authors using literary components in their story is very important since they can send what they’re trying to state to the readers quickly with the literary components.
