Frankenstein and Alienation
Rejection Result Humans are brought into this world with a clean slate some might say. They are untainted by impressions of hate, guilt, vengeance, or any other negative or positive human developed feeling. It is through social interaction and events that human beings learn social behavior and how to handle unfavorable situations. The majority of the time, rejection, alienation, and desertion will form unfavorable feelings which can then lead to anger, hate and vengeance. Throughout Mary Shelley’s unique Frankenstein (1818 ), the style of alienation through rejection and abandonment is presented continuously.
The concept that violence, due to rejection and abandonment, to control Frankenstein is what the Monster attempts to do. Not always is violence the outcome of alienation, but if nurturing or mentoring is absent, it is easy for one to act out in violence due to confusion on how to handle these feelings. Creature, daemon, production are some of the names of the being that is developed. Never ever is the development named. From the very beginning, this animal is abandoned and turned down by his own maker. From the earliest memories he has, he sees somebody leaving from him.
Victor Frankenstein describes the feelings when the creature comes to life for the very first time. One might consider this minute as his birth. Instead of mentioning sensations and concepts of success he decides to describe it as “… this catastrophe …” (Shelley 35). Frankenstein continues to elaborate on his sensations towards his newly born creature by identifying him a miscreant stating “… I rushed out of the space …” (Shelley 36) when seeing the monster for the very first time. “I beheld the wretch-the unpleasant beast whom I had created” (Shelley 36) when Frankenstein woke up from passing out a few moments before and saw the monster a second time.
This reveals the reader how quickly this animal is avoided on due to his appearances to his creator. Frankenstein even escapes from this monster leaving him deserted without anyone to nurture or reveal him enjoy and approval into the world. Research studies reveal that the first three years of human life are spent finding out the most of how to interact socially and form bonds with others. Those who are overlooked of any social interaction are significantly affected by low IQ’s and inability to form healthy relationships with others. Feral kids are examples of children who have actually been “… raised by animals and separated from humans” (Henslin 70).
These children imitate animals by “… lapping water, tore eagerly at raw meat, revealed insensitivity to pain and cold” (Henslin 70). Evidence that social interaction is what teaches us how to act. In addition, institutionalized children are another example of how abandonment and isolation weigh heavy on formation of healthy favorable social habits. Studies show that kids who are overlooked are less most likely to be social. Conformity to society and their capability to incorporate into human interactions isn’t simple for these children: “They can’t understand relationships with people … They do not end up being friendly or comply with others” (Henslin 72).
The beast initially resembled a feral kid, with no human to help raise him or teach him a human way of life. It remained in a method a bit different with the beast, however, because he discovered families and their interactions from the cottagers. Mary Shelley made it possible for the daemon to have a much greater IQ than a lot of men which helped him learn and recognize that we all need/yearn for approval. Humans are affected by negative and favorable circumstances. It is humanity to want a sense of acceptance. Through rejection or acceptance human beings develop feelings as a result which then formulate their ideas about themselves. When human beings experience a scenario of rejection, unfavorable feelings are natural as a response. Those who have a family, close friend or expert help to engage with and to mentor them with these scenarios can handle the rejection. Though hard, social interaction with those who care does soften the blow on this feeling of unacceptance from others.
On the other hand, if there is not support or guidance to give when this occurs these negative feelings may and can result to anger and revenge. Frankenstein’s daemon is presented with this extremely sensation when trying to form a relationship with the De Lacy household. He has no household of his own, he understands currently” [He is] a regrettable and deserted animal” (Shelley 3). The monster elaborates on these sensations” [He has] no good friend or relation” (Shelley 3) and shows that he recognizes he is alone and deserted. The Monster is pushed away by the abandonment of his developer.
Followed by this, the rejection from the cottagers due to his appearance is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. “I am an outcast in the world permanently” (Shelley 93) were his thoughts if the cottagers declined him, and they did. At this point he feels all connections to humanity severed. Rage set over the daemon and one goal came to mind– revenge on humanity, specifically his creator. Acting out by burning the home and demolishing whatever around him is the beginning of his determination to ease his discomfort. He is ultimately alone.
This is an ideal example of how the daemon has not one person to console him or inform him this will pass. Sadly, this scenario does exist in the real world. Children who are declined without any assistance select violent techniques and have one program of vengeance on humankind. The shooting on April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School in Colorado is an ideal example of the outcome of rage due to rejection/alienation from society. 2 trainees associated with social activities, yet not accepted, decided to snap their fury on fellow high school students.
Reports of their intentions were composed in journals and websites from the boys. Alienation was felt by the young boys expressed when they specified “I swear like I’m an outcast and everybody is conspiring versus me” (Cullen). On the day of the shootings, the kids even used t-shirts which revealed their suitables. One shooter was using “natural selection” and the other “wrath” (history1900s. about. com) on their t-shirts the day of the killings. Unfortunately, the only outlet for their thoughts, were their videos and websites and not a coach.
All these materials were left in their space, showing that possibly, the moms and dads rarely checked on them. These products could have quickly been found and the issue attended to of how they feel. Though not abandoned, the kids felt that there wasn’t any use in talking with anyone about latest thing. One could state that they were past the point of social interaction to help. The kids had actually been turned down so much, that any intervening was futile. Sometimes the consequences of human rage due to alienation from rejection is just more alienation.
One can not combat fire with fire or evil with evil. So is the case with the daemon and Frankenstein. The daemon upon creating revenge on Frankenstein ultimately triggers his death. Frankenstein is not only tired however psychologically and emotionally tired. No household is left of Frankenstein’s all alone now. This idea is a heavy burden on him particularly because he is to blame. He was the supreme cause for the beast’s alienation. By creating a monster with such horrible features he established the beast for automatic rejection. Society seems to decline any kind of physical ugliness.
Not only that, but he, the one accountable for care, turned on him the instant he needed acceptance. Now, because of his selfishness, the beast took out his rage on mankind and annihilated all of Frankenstein’s household. At this point Frankenstein himself feels separated. By seeing the death of the only connection he has to the world, the daemon is distressed a lot more. He now feels even more alone worldwide. Frankenstein was his only connection to life, and now that disappears. Once again, the feeling of seclusion from society is popular. Ultimately, the beast has no reason to live without a soul to interact with.
He knows that nobody else will ever accept him either and chooses to devote suicide. It is human nature to accept the greatest, smartest, and most importantly the stunning. Humans at one point in their life feel by doing this. Throughout life human beings will come in contact with at least one person whom socialization is possible. Envision, if from the earliest memory one is declined, and feels that throughout life, what service is there to treat them in the end? The unfortunate fact about seclusion is that as soon as one feels that they are disconnected from society it is tough to make them believe otherwise.
Society can not stop killers from murdering, or children acting out in rage due to rejection. Society can only learn from what takes place and try to inform those on these situations.
